The controls feel okay for the most part. Even when things go wrong, you have enough tools at your disposal to improvise your way out, which perhaps may be more satisfying if you manage to pull it off.ĭoing recon, sneaking in, grabbing what you need, and sneaking back out is incredibly satisfying. When everything goes smoothly: The reconnaissance->infiltration->completion->exfiltration loop is really satisfying and easily makes up for any control issues. Firefights are tense but usually don’t last more than a minute, unless they manage to call for reinforcements. As you approach your objective, you’ll use your drone to tag enemies, use a list of squad commands as you get ready to strike, take what you need then pull out. Gameplay stays true to the Ghost Recon formula but the open-world design adds a whole new layer of versatility. You’ll hear the same drunken ballad of Santa Blanca over and over throughout the entire game. You won’t experience too much of it since you’ll be spending 90% of the time using a stealthy approach using sound suppressors, but sound design overall is perfectly fine.

As for the sound effects, they’re serviceable.Įnvironmental sounds have an effectively unnerving calmness, weapons fire with a satisfying crack and explosives have a nice bass-heavy boom. It got to the point where I had to turn off ambient speech. I heard the same interviews from the local radio show and heard the same “and baby makes three” comment when tagging the third enemy within an outpost. Over the course of the 20-something hour campaign, I heard dozens of tangos drunkenly sing the same song, in the exact same way over and over again. There is an irritatingly small sample of lines during gameplay. El Sueno and the rebel leader Pakatani are particular standouts for the worst voices. Voice acting ranges from serviceable to downright awful to hilariously unconvincing. Over the course of your mission, you’ll explore good variety of environments. The Bolivian wilderness is by far, the best looking part of the game. It sticks out like a sore thumb because they’re in stark contrast to such a vivid backdrop. Rigid idle animations and a really bad case of “nutcraker-mouth” are very noticeable, even up close facial animations during in-game cutscenes are disappointingly stiff and lifeless. The character models are not nearly as convincing though. It wasn’t anything game-breaking, but it would take me out of the experience. Brief texture flickering and Nomad sometimes flat out disappearing from cutscenes. Vast deserts, wet, muggy jungles, dense forests and frigid mountaintops are all rendered in striking detail. I would however, notice an occasional visual glitch. The Bolivian wildness looks fantastic and is definitely the game’s visual showcase. Fortunately, doesn’t get in the way of the actual game too much, except for an intro video for the local province’s boss.

The story is pretty basic and full of cliches and stereotypes. But in order to bring him out of hiding, you have to dismantle his operation’s various branches (drug production, security, etc.) with help from the local rebels. You are assigned to Operation: Kingslayer, where your mission is to take out the cartel leader, El Sueno. Wildlands pits you into the Country of Bolivia, which has been transformed into a narco state by Santa Blanca, a Mexican drug cartel whose influence now spans the entire globe. Does this one hit its target with a perfectly synced bullseye? Or is it better off going AWOL?

It later streamlined into a console-focused, squad-based shooter with Ghost Recon 2 (Which never even saw a PC release). Starting out as essentially a US Special Forces version of Rainbow Six. Among the established series within the Tom Clancy canon, none have gone through as many radical changes as Ghost Recon.
